Bolton Lads and Girls Club was established in 1889 in the former Lancashire mill town of Bolton, just after the peak of the Industrial Revolution in England. It is still one of the oldest and to this day the largest youth club in the United Kingdom. Young people and children often worked more than ten or twelve hours a day in the industrial cotton mills, factories, and coal mines. However, the club was set up by a group of philanthropic business men and church leaders during a year full of immense social and industrial change including the creation of the Children's Charter and the development of New Unionism following strikes for minimum wage.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=workersliberty.org )〕 Initially, sports such as athletics, gymnastics, boxing and then football were the mainstay of the club. Local urban rumour claims that the club provided four orphan gymnasts who represented Great Britain at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam.〔(【引用サイトリンク】title=issuu.com/ )〕 The original club house was located at an old warehouse in Bark Street and opened as a hostel where children were able to eat and rest. The location of the club has moved several times in its history but it is still located in the traditional industrial heartlands of Bolton.
